According to oxforddictionaries.com, a trend is “a general direction in which something is developing or changing”. The word itself implies that there is something new and exciting happening in the world. Within our virtual world, a trend refers to the latest buzz or topic having “many posts on a social media website within a short period of time”. These days, whatever is “trending” on the World Wide Web IS the topic of the day, the must-see or must-have.
Do I believe that essential oils are the new trend, the latest buzz word, the must-have of the population? To answer this question, I first have to explore what, in fact, are essential oils.
What are essential oils?
Most of us have strolled through a beautiful flower garden of roses or geraniums. We have marveled at the sight of grapefruits, oranges and lemons growing on trees. We have inhaled the fragrance of an herb garden filled with basil, marjoram and oregano. If you were lucky, you may have been able to pluck a peppermint leaf directly from the plant, and chew it to release the delicious flavor of pure peppermint in your mouth. We have all seen where these plants, trees, flowers, fruits, and herbs grow. Have you ever wondered HOW they grow? How do they protect themselves from natural predators and diseases? Interesting enough, they all have the same natural defense: essential oils.
Let’s think about this fact for a moment. Flowers of all species release fragrances in order to attract the pollinators like bees and butterflies. Some plants actually emit strong scents, like the eucalyptus, which deter other vegetation from growing in its surrounding area. Plants and trees will release certain compounds within their oils to defend themselves from approaching insects or animals. In addition to these defenses, nature’s own essential oils contain antibacterial and anti fungal properties that safeguard the plants from disease, microbes, and various organisms that impact their healthy growth.
Healing and defense strategies from plants
Since the beginning of time, man has turned to nature for its healing and defense strategies and adapted the methods to combat our everyday problems. Humans are exposed to many of the same viruses, diseases, and natural predators that nature and plants must also defend against. By understanding the science of essential oils in nature, we can learn from our green friends, and adapt solutions for healing that have already proven to work throughout the ages.
The ancient Romans chewed peppermint leaves to settle their upset stomachs. The Greeks steeped dried chamomile flowers to make tea that would calm anxieties and ease stress. In the 1700s, the aboriginal communities in Australia used eucalyptus leaves for the healing of all kinds of wounds, as well as easing colic complaints. Using nature’s plants to heal is not a new concept or discovery.
New Trend or Not?
Do I believe that essential oils are a new trend? Absolutely not. What may be new is that, in 2008, dōTERRA® Essential Oils has joined the industry. Actually, the Latin word dōTERRA means “Gift of the earth”. Within a few short years, this company has become one of the top suppliers of Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® (CPTG) essential oils. They have set a mission of sharing this purity with the world.
The concept and use of essential oils in our everyday life is not new to humans. It really has been in existence for a very long time. The only new trend that I see is the reintroduction of pure essential oils as a natural way to health and overall wellness. Integrating essential oils into your every day life has never been easier. Welcome to the world of essential oils.
